Donburi at Hotaru

Tonight, I was treated to a delicious dinner at Hotaru, a Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, CA. My date and I each ordered donburi –more commonly referred to as don– which consists of vegetables, fish or meat, simmered in sauce and served in an oversize bowl on top of rice.

I Just Went To…New Harmony

On Friday I finally tried New Harmony, a vegetarian BYOB on the edge of Philadelphia’s Chinatown. I’d heard nothing but good things about this place—mostly that the food is cheap and tasty—so I was excited to go.

My friend and I headed to the restaurant around 6 p.m. From the outside, it looked as though New Harmony might have been a decent sized place; once we got inside however, we realized just how… cozy of an establishment it was.

We were greeted warmly by a middle aged man in a red blazer, and taken to our table, which was on the back side of a narrow curve into the heart of the restaurant. There were maybe six tables arranged snuggly in our section, and ours was one of the last.

New Harmony’s size didn’t pose an issue, since the restaurant wasn’t at all crowded. From what I understand, there are never a lot of people present, an unfortunate though convenient fact. On the down side, it probably means not as many people know about is as should, but on the up side, we didn’t have to wait to be seated, and our service was fast—really fast.
